Assignment 1 Video Production

This project aims to resolve the issue of TFM Soundworks. they have approached the college as they are due to open at the end of the month. i have been asked to advise them on how best their music content could be distributed online. I have been asked to produce a report explaining the range of online distribution methods so that their marketing team can decide how they can best reach their audience.

DIGITAL DISTRIBUTION - ( content delivery, online distribution or electronic software distribution)

this describes the delivery means of media content such as audio, video, software and video games.
online distribution bypasses traditional means of physical distribution methods such as hard files like paper, DVD's and CD's. with the way that technology has evolved and the advancement in network bandwidth capabilities online distribution has become very prominent since the 2000's.

DOWNLOAD

in the context of which we are using here download literally means recieve and save and realistically explains its self in this way more than any. The dowloadable content would only be usable once the download was complete

PROGRESSIVE STREAMING

the concept of progressive streaming is one of which you are able to show pre-recorded information (video or music) over a network of which a user can join and then view without saving the content to his/her hard drive but only be able to view whenc onnected  to the network.

TRUE STREAMING

the concept of true streaming is live information is fed to a server and then sent directly to the user this is not edited and therefore is shown as seen by anybody watching the event live example such as the famous felix baumgartner jumping from space was shown through live streaming to millions.

i have researched good examples of each of these online distribution methods and they are shown below, these examples have been made relevant to TFM Soundworks in order to give their marketing team a good references to use in making their decision.

Download- ITUNES, Amazon,Napster

Progressive Streaming, youtube, vimeo, netflix, lovefilm, bbciplayer, 4od, itunes, vevo

True Streaming - youtube- justin.tv twitch.tv. bbciplayer.

Although downloading is an option I do not feel that it would be the most suitable out of the options this is for multiple reasons. There are faster options available and I feel this would stop people from using the service knowing they have a faster alternative, mostly when veiwing this type of material it would be considered a one once video and therefore downloading something that you do not want to keep would not be suitable also the user would have a to be able to store the data this is something they may not have the capacity to do so. Last I feel that when this type of material can be accessed on other sites instantly the consumer would be inclined to leave the site and view other material elsewhere.

Progressive streaming is the most commonly used in this industry when it comes to digital distribution and for good reason I feel. It is instantly accessible firstly reducing the risk of viewers becoming unsettled and impatient. There would be no need for external memory in order to store the data as no data would be kept on the system viewing the material. The only negative in comparison to download is the consumer would only be able to view the material when online as no data is stored.

True streaming is another option but would not be cost effective for an early starting business, also this would only be effective if you offered the option of progressive streaming at the same time as not all viewers would be able to make the time the material would be scheduled for, this I feel would greatly reduce the amount of consumers beig able to access the material.

Through my research I feel that progressive streaming would be the most cost effective but also the highest probability of being able to deliver this material to the largest possible audience allowing people to access this material freely when online there are example of the most successful companies doing this and I feel that beig with in this industry with large competitors it would be more effective and efficent. I would recommend true streaming to be considered but only for certain events if it was financially theasable at the time.

understanding working to a client brief.

There are different types of briefs, i have been asked to show this within an application for Middlesbrough college, within this brief i will show structural briefs such as negotiated, formal, informal, commission based, a cooperative brief and also competition.

i will show that i understand and recognize the nature and demand implicit in brief, how to negotiate within a brief, this will include a consultation with with the client, discretion interpreting the brief such as constraints ( legal, ethical, and regularity), amendments to conditions and also fees.

i will then show the opportunities available such as opportunities for self-development such as new skills, multi-skilling and contributions to project brief.

Structures of a brief.

a contractual brief is an agreement between the client and the employees. the contractual brief explains the duties required and how the the company carries out its work (code of practice). the contractual brief also shows how much the employee will receive. the contractual brief includes areas such as what the employee is is agreeing to before signing to show that in turn they agree to fulfill the contract. a contractual brief may also contain information such as general liability insurance. it is a legal contract between the advertising company and its client which describes the duties required as well as the price and the payment terms.

a negotiated brief is again a contractual obligation that is agreed between the client and whom ever is being contracted to carry out the work, a good example of this would be a collaboration between two companies as they would have to agree on what work would be carried out by each party. the advantages of this would be the ability to create more ideas to improve the agreed work due to a combination of ideas from both the client and the supplier. the disadvantages would be that there may be disagreements about the ideas of the client or vice-versa.

a formal brief is a formal written document which usually contains specific and also precise details about the goals and targets that need to be achieved. a formal brief would not usually contain any unnecessary detail or information. this type of brief would usually be aimed at a company or a party of people rather than individuals, also this would not always be a legally binding document.

an informal brief is usually not a document but a verbal agreement but can be either, this is where a client and the company which they have been employed by discuss the requirements for the project that is being undertaken. The advantages of this type of brief is that there is more of a verbal communication between the two parties which would usually mean the hired company may have a greater understanding of the project to be carried out. The disadvantages to this type of agreement quite simply is that there is no legally binding contract, this can usually lead to employee's being unpaid or deadlines not being met.

a commission based brief is based upon the idea that a large media company would employ another media company to run and produce the project for them, this would then be used by the employee possibly for an external client who would pay the independent company for running the project. this would possibly result in the independent company receiving royalties for the project too. the brief would not be negotiated by the company and the client, however is negotiated between the two media companies.

a tender brief would be used by a client that would advertise, in response a production company would bring together a proposal that would then be pitched to the client, there would usually be multiple pitches from multiple companies, so the client will then get the chance to choose the proposal that best suits their brief and would then offer the job to that company.

a co-operative brief  is usually two or more companies that are hired to work to a specific brief designed by the client. once both companies have received their brief they can then proceed to carry out the work required. if there is disagreement or difference in ideas there would usually be a negotiated brief in order to resolve these issues.

a competition brief is a type of brief of which the client would usually put it out publicly or send it to chosen companies participating, it would sometimes be seen as a free competition as each production company would complete the brief and the client would be able to choose the one that is best suited to them or that they like the most. As an award this would be published.

Reading a brief

when receiving a brief it is very important that you read it thoroughly. you must make sure that you fully understand what is being asked of you within the brief, to the specific standards set by the client in order to guarantee such things such as : being payed for the work carried out, customer satisfaction, reputation within the industry and also it is important for the client and the employee to meet deadlines this is for all of the reason stated but also financially o the employee as more time on the project essentially would cost more money.

Negotiating with a client

i feel that it is important to discuss the brief with the client prior to production as when you meet your client you would be able to discuss the brief with them, this would be a good opportunity to raise any issues that you feel lie within the project, also offering any ideas that you fell will improve the project. This would also allow you to begin the project confidently knowing that you and the client both agree completely on what needs to be done to create the right product for them. the client of course may take your idea on board or disregard them completely as they may feel it would not portray what they envision. if you were to carry out the project with your ideas having not negotiated with the client you may not be payed for the work carried out, as they would be entitled to accuse the company of not working to the guidelines of the brief that they provided.

There are advantages and disadvantages of employing discretion within a brief, the advantages of doing this would be that this would make it more flexible between you and the client, meaning that you would be able to discuss freely many different ideas that the company would have for the client. they would also accept/decline the deadline without any hostility. the disadvantages would be that the brief could be seen as quite weak as not everything is set in stone.

There are potentially  legal, ethical and regulatory issues with some briefs these would generally consist of copy right issues, making sure the client understands these and any infringements that would occur by using the material they have chosen. Also it is important to make the client aware of any ethical issues that may be portrayed by carrying out the project in the manner they have chosen should they arise for example if they were to create a project to raise awareness on racism this would have to be done in a manner that is sensitive to those affected by racism.

There would usually be amendments made to the final product. These may consist of such things like the product, the budget and the conditions.

The product - there may be things needed changing within the brief upon readin it these may consist of

  • overlay in time
  • ambitious deadlines
  • time scales
  • scopes

There may not be enough finance to complete the product, this may result in amendments being made to the budget. if this happens there are generally two options either to increase the budget or decrease the scope of the project.

The conditions of the project may need to be amended, this generally happens if you were to run over time. you would need to approach the client about the matter of your pay being increased, this would generally be difficult after the contract has been signed. It would be more beneficial to discuss the possibility of this with the client prior to signing the contract.

There are many opportunities that lie within taking on briefs these would usually consist of self development, learning new skills, multi-skilling and contributing to a brief.

briefs are a good opportunity to be able to explore what tasks we are generally good at and what we aren't as good at this would allow you to assess this and productively improve through self-development. within the brief there may be certain tasks that you have never come across before this would allow you to learn new skills through-out. in circumstances where you would not use a large production company it would give you the opportunity to multi-skill as you may have to complete different roles within the project. once reading the brief an individual may decide to create such things as mind maps and mood boards this would allow them to contribute to the project.

screen writing notes

Screen writing theory!
Objective
To understand the role concept, theme, characters and structure play in storytelling. In this order!
CONCEPT. Like a survey this should be tested to check if it is sound!
LOGLINE –is the film explained in 40 words or less.
Whos the protagonist, what happens to them and what do they have to overcome. Formula for a logline.
Protagonist= hero.
Antagonist=villain.
A film is always about what happens to the protagonist that is why a logline is always important so that once viewed people are able to explain the film in a simple manner.
There are 2 types of loglines this is not an academic teaching but a trade/industry reference.
Compass logline- the writer at the beginning and this is to keep the direction of the story travelling continually throughout in same direction.
Logline – the final logline is created at the end of the film and is an aid in use of pitching/selling the movie to a director and an audience through a trailer.
Synopsis – 1 page of information that explains the story ( a fleshed out logline) for each act of the story.
Treatment- 10-50 pages long.

THEME- is what it is really all about it can be one or two words or what if e.g. aliens the theme of that film is motherhood.
CHARACTERS-
Protagonist-luke skwalker
Antagonist- darth vader
Stakes- princess leah
Mentor- obi won kanobe
Names (who they are, what they are about in this world) –
Skills –
CORE NEGATIVE BELIEFS –all characters must have a weakness or flaw this is the thing that drives the characters there neurotic behaviour is driven by this.
Both antagonist and protagonist must be strong but in different ways to create a balanced battle otherwise one or the other will easily walk over the other.
Characters motivation- what the character is driven by their ambition and there drive and the reasons why
Dilemma is a morale choice that will come up somewhere through the film the protagonist will always decide to do the right thing and the antagonist will always decide to do the wrong thing. The harder you make the choice for the protagonist the more drama you will get out of it. The closer they are to the edge of looking like they may make the wrong decision the better the drama or the more they have to lose by making the right choice.
Secrets- each character must have secrets as this creates conflict as people will try and exploit people because of this and use it against them again the better and bigger the secret the bigger the conflict the more they have to lose by this being released .
Back story- all characters will have a back story where they are from and what they have done initially (a biography of the character to understand who they are.)
STRUCTURE- 3 act structure developed by syd field beginning, middle, end.  The whole script should be  85-117 anymore is looking at 2 hours long they prefer 90-100.
Act 1 – one page of screen play formatted in film format equals one minute of film on average. The act structure is also looked upon as the heroes journey (greek mythology) there is only one story it is just told over and over again.
0-10 pages in (the ordinary world)
10 pages in is the INSIGHTING INCIDENT
27-30 is the 1st act break
50 is the mid break
75 pages in is the 2nd act break
75 to the end is the end fight conclusion love romance
in sighting incident the moment in the film that sends the protagonist on their journey. This then continues creating bad things until you get to the 1st act break this is where there is a large change in the story a surprise and then continues to keep bad things happening until the middle where really bad stuff keeps happening, then the 2nd act break bigger reversal and then the end is the conclusion fight love end fight.
PAGES 1-10 ORDINARY WORLD
PAGE 10 – ORDINARY WORLD
First 25 pages is about secluding the protagonist (hero)
Pages 25-50 is about them trying to find answers (protagonist)
50-75 pages which is generally the death of the mentor and then full warrior mode
75+ is martyr where they generally have to sacrifice something from themselves or themself completely.
The more the protagonist is beaten down and losing the more the antagonist is winning and gaining until the protagonist begins to fight the father figure is taken and then the protagonist starts to become the mentor and sacrifices himself for the greater good through sacrifice he will prevail.  Antagonist will never sacrifice and this is his weakness.
There are usually 6-8 sequences within each act unless it is a hugely action orientated film then there may be less.
You would write on each FILE CARD questions to the effect of sequence one what is the protagonists ordinary world sequence 2 identify incident ?
3 pages a sequence!!!
25 pages per act
De noumente is the final act!

Conflict is the core of all drama, drama is driven by conflict.
Always make sure that you have the right producer right day right project. Always have other idea’s readily available when in a position to share them.

Objective : to

Autheur = author a personal stamp on the film that only they could bring
Creative =
Technical
DYEGESIS- when we create a film we create a world that has rules but they don’t have to reflect real life. The world in which the film inhabits is called the dyegesis this is to give the film a foot hold in the real world to connect with the audience,
MISE-EN-SCENE- location colour direction setting the world must be relevant to the story. Controlling the totality of the image ( clothes make-up expression black and white depicts the era if your able to pick up on a lot of things based on the settings and things that influence the audience with out words this is the mise-on-scene.
Kuleshov theory is showing an emote expression (an emotionless person then move from that image to an image that depicts an emotion this then move back to the image of the blank expression you will then project that expression on to the character you see before you. What does somebody see what does somebody hear in the film and this is important in film directing to move the audience in the direction you want them to (to create an emotional judgment on your character based on the images that you create as to create a collective emotional decision that the audience and the director both agree on.

Copyright
Copyright is a legal concept, enacted by most governments, giving the creator of an original work exclusive rights to it, usually for a limited time, with the intention of enabling the creator of intellectual wealth (e.g. the photographer of a photograph or the author of a book) to get compensated for their work and be able to financially support themselves. Generally, it is "the right to copy", but also gives the copyright holder the right to be credited for the work, to determine who may adapt the work to other forms, who may perform the work, who may financially benefit from it, and otherrelated rights. It is a form of intellectual property (like the patent, thetrademark, and the trade secret) applicable to any expressible form of an idea or information that is substantive and discrete

Public domain
Works in the public domain are those whose intellectual property rights have expired,[1] have been forfeited,[2] or are inapplicable. Examples include the works of Shakespeare and Beethoven, The King James Bible, most of the early silent films, the formulae of Newtonian physics, and the patents on powered flight.[1] The term is not normally applied to situations where the creator of a work retains residual rights, in which case use of the work is referred to as "under license" or "with permission".
In informal usage, the public domain consists of works that are publicly available; while according to the formal definition, it consists of works that are unavailable for private ownership or are available for public use.[2] As rights are country-based and vary, a work may be subject to rights in one country and not in another. Some rights depend on registrations with a country-by-country basis, and the absence of registration in a particular country, if required, implies public domain status in that country.

Creative commons
Creative Commons (CC) is a non-profit organization headquartered inMountain View, California, United States, devoted to expanding the range ofcreative works available for others to build upon legally and to share.[1] The organization has released several copyright-licenses known as Creative Commons licenses free of charge to the public. These licenses allow creators to communicate which rights they reserve, and which rights theywaive for the benefit of recipients or other creators. An easy-to-understand one-page explanation of rights, with associated visual symbols, explains the specifics of each Creative Commons license. Creative Commons licenses do not replace copyright, but are based upon it. They replace individual negotiations for specific rights between copyright owner (licensor) and licensee, which are necessary under an "all rights reserved" copyright management with a "some rights reserved" management employing standardized licenses for re-use cases where no commercial compensation is sought by the copyright owner. The result is an agile, low-overhead and low-cost copyright-management regime, profiting both copyright owners and licensees. Wikipedia uses one of these licenses

Film certification
motion picture rating system is designated to classify films with regard to suitability for audiences in terms of issues such as sex, violence, substance abuse, profanity, impudence or other types of mature content. A particular issued rating can be called a certificationclassificationcertificate or rating.

Character deformation
Under common law, to constitute defamation, a claim must generally be false and have been made to someone other than the person defamed.[1] Some common law jurisdictions also distinguish between spoken defamation, calledslander, and defamation in other media such as printed words or images, called libel.

liable
In law, a person is legally liable when they are financially and legally responsible for something. Legal liability concerns both civil law andcriminal law. Legal liability can arise from various areas of law, such ascontractstort judgments or settlements, taxes, or fines given bygovernment agencies. Liabilities may be covered by insurance, although typically insurance covers liability arising from negligent torts rather than intentional wrongs or breach of contract. Liability may also be imposed joint and severally in certain cases. Liabilities arising from a contract to borrow money are debt.

research for movie review show

Movie review shows what works?
Epic movie review
Vox pops
3 guys one sofa
Wide range of review by asking the general public giving the public their say
Also a little funny part of it is the natural banter between the group
I found this to be very niche as the reviewer can’t see this makes it almost like his other senses have to be greater.
He talks about the acting and I feel he would have a greater appreciation for the story to the film
harsh higher level of review from what you feel is a subject matter expert and seems to review the content more than just entertainment value ( more information than usual )
straight to the point
and very interlectual
